Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy

To introduce Chinese Calligraphy, an unique form of art to beginners, including non-Chinese speaking adults

Purpose:

       To provide an all-rounded introduction to Chinese calligraphy including its historical development and essential facts

        To provide meaningful guidance to students based on their needs and abilities

        To put theory into practice through a step-by-step process, thereby imparting cultural knowledge and basic calligraphic techniques to students, and captivating their interest in Chinese calligraphy.

        The class will be hands on and focus on the developing of basic skills and techniques of creating beautiful brush lettering and Chinese calligraphy.

Course Outline:

 Introduction (Purpose of  Learning Chinese Calligraphy)
 Basic Writing Materials and Usage ( 4 Treasures of the Study)
 Chinese Characters Styles (5 common styles)    and history of Calligraphy
 Correct Postures and Skills of handling brush    including demonstration & practice
 Basic Brushstrokes of Calligraphy and its    fundamental Rules
 Principle of characters’ Structure/Planning
 Select Model Books/Templates - Focus on    Standard Style of Calligraphy
 Practice on different type of brushstrokes and ancient Chinese Calligraphy writings including tracing and copying. Also,  writing of well-know Chinese    saying and create meaningful greeting cards and artworks.  


Course Instructor: Mr. Chew Ho Son 

Chinese Calligraphy has always been Mr Chew’s interest and he had spent most of his time cultivating the beauty of calligraphy. Since 1995, he had taken part in Chinese Calligraphy Competition in Singapore, China, France and many others. 17 times he participated and his works are outstanding and was used for exhibitions in countries like China, Canada, Paris, Brazil, Japan and many others.
