Lien Shih Sheng's fund Chinese literature events

A seminar by Professor Yu Kwang-chung and Lien Shih Sheng’s collected works book launch were organized by Confucius Institute, NTU in conjunction with the 2009 Lien Shih Sheng Youth Chinese Literature Award ceremony

Lien Shih Sheng Youth Chinese Literature Award ceremony was held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic Conference Hall on 5 September 2009. Over 1,400 participants from secondary schools, junior colleges, polytechnics, universities and general public attended the event.

The ceremony was graced by Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of National Development.

Over 200 entries were received for this year's contest. Zou Liaowang from Zhong Hua Secondary School and Wei Wei from Anglo-Chinese Junior College won the Secondary School and Junior College category respectively. (Please refers to the Attachment for a list of the winners)

Book Launch : "Looking back Forty Years" and "Youth Literature"
Mr Lien Shih Sheng's collected works "Looking Back Forty years" and collector's edition "Youth Literature" were presented and launched at the ceremony.

"Looking Back Forty Years," is a special collector's edition of Lien Shih Sheng's works. It was first published in 1952 after Mr Lien immigrated to Singapore.  The book, recalled how Mr Lien strived from rural Fujian Province poverty to achieve his accomplishments in literature. Readers will be able to learn and appreciate how Mr Lien overcame hardships through his positive thinking. The book was edited by Mr Lien's children Lien Lian Sze, Lien Qiao Sze and Lien Wen Sze.  Chief editor of the book, Dr Lien Wen Sze introduced the book during the book launch.

"Youth Literature" - a collection of more than 40 selected articles by students from secondary schools and Junior Colleges in Singapore. The book compiled winning entries specially selected from the 2007 and 2008 Lien Shih Sheng Youth Chinese Literature Fund competition. Included are winning entries from the semi-finals (on-site writing contest) and the finals (from 2007 - Yangzhou, China and from 2008 – online contest). Winners of this year competition each received a copy of the book.

Professor Yu Kwang Chung lecture on Chinese and English, writing and translation
The final event planned for the ceremony was a lecture by renowned Professor Yu Kwang Chung on the issues and challenges facing Chinese and English translation and writing style. Professor Yu illustrated his points with several examples including those for analysis, comparison and description. He stressed and advised learners to use less Chinese poetry phrases when translating Chinese into English and similarly not to bring English expression, indiscriminately into Chinese translation.

A recital of prose and poem was presented by Ngee Ann Polytechnic Department of Chinese students.
